If you've been following Robert Gordon Pottery for a while, you're probably familiar with our White Ochre glaze. This uniquely Australian finish is inspired by the natural colours and textures of our land. One of the features that makes White Ochre so special is its reactive and evolving nature, shaped by the handmade application process.
To create the glaze, we begin with a batch of our trusted 'Brown jasper' formula - a rich, earthy brown that has been a staple in our homewares collections for many years. Each piece is carefully dipped or sprayed with this glaze, depending on whether it's a basin or a light. We then layer a reactive white glaze over the Brown Jasper. When fired in the kiln, the iron oxide in these formulas interacts on the surface to create a beautiful reaction.
This process results in each piece being truly unique and one of a kind. Some pieces may feature large, flowing surface patterns, while others may showcase smaller, more intricate clusters. This variation is what we love most about White Ochre, with its unmistakable character and charm.
Of course, this uniqueness can be both a blessing and a challenge. While we adore the indivuality of each piece, it's almost impossible to recreate a exact shade / version of it. Because of the reactive nature, it's not something we can control or customize on request.
If you have a particular vision in mind for your White Ochre piece, we invite you to visit our showroom in Pakenham. Here, you can explore our current stock and find the perfect piece that speaks to you. At Robert Gordon we embrace the beauty of imperfection. White Ochre is a true testament to this philosophy, an ever evolving glaze that connects us to the land.
